Every family has its rituals. In our case, the annual dinner is a true cornerstone. As glasses clinked and conversations grew lively, my husband, Thomas, entered. But he wasn’t alone. On his arm stood an elegant, radiant young woman, her belly rounded. Léna. A leaden silence fell over the gathering. The joyful celebration I had envisioned suddenly froze in an icy awkwardness.
