Part 2 — The Envelope Robert Left for Me
Leonard placed the sealed envelope on the table.
Nobody moved.
Jason stared at it as though he already knew what was inside.
Margaret leaned forward.
“What exactly is that?” she demanded.
Leonard didn’t answer her.
Instead, he slid the envelope toward me.
“Mr. Whitlock was very specific. This document is to be opened by Emily Rowan alone.”
My fingers felt strangely cold as I picked it up.
There was only one word written across the front in Robert’s unmistakable handwriting:
Emily.
I looked at Jason.
For the first time since I had entered the room, he didn’t look confident.
He looked afraid.
I broke the seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
I unfolded it.
Dear Emily,
If you are reading this, then I’m gone—and I owe you an apology.
My eyes immediately filled with tears.
Robert continued:
I knew about Jason’s betrayal long before you discovered it. I also knew you believed your marriage ended because he stopped loving you.
That isn’t the whole truth.
I stopped reading.
Jason suddenly stood.
“Dad was sick near the end. He wasn’t thinking clearly.”
Leonard looked at him.
“Sit down, Mr. Whitlock.”
Jason slowly sat.
I continued.
Jason didn’t marry Megan because he loved her. He married her because she knew about something I discovered years ago.
Something that could destroy this family.
Margaret’s face changed.
“Leonard,” she whispered. “This is unnecessary.”
“No,” Leonard replied calmly. “Your husband specifically instructed me to read the remaining documents if Emily chose to continue.”
I looked at him.
“Continue.”
He nodded.
I returned to the letter.
Emily, you were never merely my daughter-in-law. You were the only person in this family I trusted completely.
That is why I am leaving you control of the Whitlock Foundation, my private investment accounts, and the property at 417 Hawthorne Lane.
But the money isn’t the reason I asked you to come.
My heart pounded.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
There is a locked room beneath the Hawthorne property.
Inside is everything you need to understand what Jason, Margaret, and Megan have been hiding.
Do not confront them until you see it for yourself.
Trust Sarah. Trust Leonard. Trust no one else.
I slowly lowered the letter.
Margaret stood abruptly.
“This is ridiculous!”
Leonard didn’t even blink.
“Mrs. Whitlock, there is one more item.”
He opened a second folder.
Inside was a photograph.
He turned it toward me.
I stared at the image.
It showed Jason standing outside a warehouse.
Beside him was Megan.
And beside them…
was a man I had never seen before.
But Robert had written a name underneath the photograph.
Daniel Rowan.
My blood ran cold.
Daniel Rowan.
My father.
The man I had been told died when I was twelve.
I looked at Leonard.
“My father is dead.”
He nodded slowly.
“That is what you were told.”
Jason suddenly stood again.
“Emily, don’t listen to him.”
I turned toward my ex-husband.
“Why?”
He couldn’t answer.
Margaret began crying.
Megan grabbed Jason’s arm.
And in that moment, I finally understood something.
Robert hadn’t summoned me to his will reading because he wanted to give me an inheritance.
He had summoned me because he had discovered that the story of my own family was a lie.
Leonard placed a small brass key beside the photograph.
“This opens the room beneath Hawthorne Lane.”
I stared at it.
Then he quietly added:
“Your father may be alive.”
My entire world stopped.
And Jason whispered the words that made everything even worse:
“Emily… if you go to that house, you’re going to learn why your father disappeared.”
I picked up the key.
“I think that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”
