PART 2 — THE HIDDEN ENVELOPE
Daniela lowered her phone slowly.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Santiago stood up.
“Mom, what was that?”
Teresa crossed her arms.
“She needed to understand her place.”
I looked at my husband.
“Santiago, did you know she was planning this?”
He shook his head immediately.
“No. I swear I didn’t.”
Daniela suddenly laughed.
“That’s not what this is about.”
Everyone turned toward her.
She held up her phone.
“I recorded everything.”
Teresa’s face changed.
“Daniela, give me that phone.”
“No.”
For the first time that evening, Daniela wasn’t smiling.
She looked at me.
“Valeria, there’s something you need to know.”
She opened a photograph on her phone.
It showed an old envelope sitting inside a wooden desk drawer.
My stomach tightened.
“What is that?”
“Dad’s handwriting,” she said.
Santiago stepped closer.
“Where did you find it?”
“In Mom’s study.”
Teresa immediately tried to take the phone from her daughter.
Daniela stepped backward.
“Don’t.”
The room became completely silent.
Daniela continued.
“Before Dad died, he left instructions with his attorney. There was supposed to be an envelope containing documents about the family inheritance.”
Teresa’s voice became sharp.
“That envelope doesn’t concern you.”
Daniela looked at her.
“That’s exactly what I thought.”
She turned toward me.
“But then I found out something.”
She zoomed in on the photograph.
The name written on the envelope wasn’t Santiago’s.
It wasn’t Daniela’s.
It was mine.
VALERIA MENDOZA.
I couldn’t breathe.
Santiago looked just as shocked.
“Why would Dad leave something for Valeria?”
Teresa said nothing.
I suddenly remembered something my father-in-law had told me shortly before the wedding.
He had taken me aside during dinner and said:
“Never let anyone convince you that you don’t belong at this table.”
At the time, I thought he was simply being kind.
Now I wondered whether he had been warning me.
Daniela lowered her voice.
“Dad knew something about the family business that Mom never wanted us to discover.”
Teresa finally snapped.
“Enough!”
But Daniela kept talking.
“He knew there were assets that had been transferred without the family’s knowledge.”
Santiago stared at his mother.
“What assets?”
Teresa’s silence was answer enough.
Then Daniela reached into her handbag.
She pulled out a second envelope.
“This one was hidden behind the back panel of Dad’s desk.”
She handed it to me.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside were copies of bank statements, property records, and a handwritten letter.
The first line made my heart stop.
“Valeria, if you’re reading this, I failed to protect you before I died.”
I looked at Santiago.
He was staring at the letter over my shoulder.
The room had gone completely silent.
I continued reading.
The letter explained that my father-in-law had discovered money being moved from several family accounts.
But there was something even more shocking.
He had discovered that Teresa had been preparing to remove certain properties from the inheritance before the family ever knew they existed.
And one of those properties had been legally designated for Santiago and his future spouse.
Teresa had apparently never intended to tell him.
I looked up.
“Why would you hide this?”
Teresa’s expression hardened.
“Because you don’t understand how this family works.”
“No,” I said quietly.
“I understand perfectly now.”
Then Santiago took the documents from my hands.
His face became pale as he read the final page.
There was a signature.
His father’s.
And beneath it, one sentence:
“My son must never surrender control of these assets to his mother.”
Santiago slowly looked at Teresa.
“Mom…”
She didn’t answer.
Daniela whispered:
“There was one more thing in the envelope.”
“What?”
She pointed toward the dining room.
“The inheritance wasn’t the only reason Dad wanted Valeria to have those documents.”
I turned toward her.
“What do you mean?”
Daniela’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because he knew Mom would eventually try to destroy your marriage.”
Then she looked at Santiago.
“And he left proof of why.”
At that moment, Santiago’s phone began ringing.
The caller ID showed the name of his father’s longtime attorney.
Santiago answered.
The attorney spoke only one sentence.
“Mr. Mendoza, I believe it’s time you learned what your mother did with your father’s final will.”
And Teresa suddenly sat down.
Because she knew the secret was finally out.
