Admiral on Deck

Part 1 — The Room Stood Up

Then a broad-shouldered man beside the aisle looked at the insignia on my shoulders.

His chair crashed backward as he stood.

The man beside him rose too.

Then another man across the ballroom pushed his chair back and stood.

Within seconds, the entire room was moving.

Chair after chair scraped against the polished floor.

Men and women in dress uniforms, formal suits, and evening gowns rose to their feet.

I froze.

I recognized some of them immediately.

Others I knew only by voice, face, or call sign.

Nearly three hundred members of the Naval Special Warfare community were scattered throughout the ballroom.

They had come for Grant’s family.

Or so I thought.

Then a commander near the front snapped to attention.

His voice thundered across the room.

“ADMIRAL ON DECK!”

The quartet stopped.

Every conversation died.

Three hundred people stood perfectly still.

My father stopped breathing.

Madison’s mouth fell open.

Grant turned slowly toward me.

And suddenly, the ballroom wasn’t looking at the embarrassing daughter in a Navy uniform.

They were looking at the officer who had spent eight months in places most of them would never be allowed to know existed.

I gave a small nod.

“At ease.”

Nobody moved.

Then an older master chief stepped forward.

His eyes were wet.

“Ma’am.”

I recognized him.

Master Chief Thomas Walker.

He had been with my task force during our last deployment.

He had also been the man who carried me out of a helicopter after a mission went wrong.

He saluted.

I returned it.

Then he lowered his hand.

“Welcome home, Admiral Hale.”

My father’s face went completely white.

Madison stared at me.

“Admiral?”

I didn’t answer.

Because behind her, someone else had just stood.

Grant’s father.

He looked at my insignia.

Then at my father.

Then back at me.

And his expression changed.

He whispered,

“Robert…”

My father swallowed.

“What?”

“You told us she worked behind a desk.”

My father didn’t answer.

Grant’s mother stepped forward.

“Rebecca, is that really you?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

She smiled.

Then she turned toward my father.

“You never told us your daughter was the commander of Naval Special Warfare’s task force.”

My father looked trapped.

“I didn’t think it was important.”

A quiet laugh came from somewhere in the crowd.

Not an amused laugh.

A disbelieving one.

Master Chief Walker looked at my father.

“With respect, sir…”

He paused.

“You had no idea who your daughter was.”
