Homemade Honey-Ginger Lemon Syrup: A Simple Recipe for Cold Weather

  • by

When temperatures drop, there’s nothing quite like a warm drink made with honey, fresh ginger, and lemon. This homemade syrup combines three simple ingredients into a sweet, citrusy, slightly spicy mixture that’s perfect for chilly mornings and winter evenings.

It’s easy to prepare, requires no cooking, and tastes delicious stirred into warm water or tea. Honey may also help soothe occasional coughs, although this syrup isn’t a treatment for colds or flu.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium lemons
  • 100 g fresh ginger
  • 300–350 g honey
  • Optional: 1 cinnamon stick or 2 cloves
  • 1 clean glass jar (500–750 ml)

How to Make Honey-Ginger Lemon Syrup

1. Prepare the lemons. Wash the lemons thoroughly, especially if you’re keeping the peel. Cut into thin slices and remove all seeds to prevent bitterness.

2. Slice the ginger. Wash the ginger, peel if desired, and cut into thin slices. Thin pieces release their flavor more easily.

3. Layer the ingredients. Place alternating layers of lemon and ginger into a clean glass jar. Add cinnamon or cloves if desired.

4. Pour in the honey. Slowly add enough honey to surround the ingredients, gently stirring to release trapped air.

5. Refrigerate. Close the jar and place it directly in the refrigerator. Let the mixture infuse for 12–24 hours. The lemons will release juice, gradually turning the honey into a thinner, fragrant syrup.

6. Strain and enjoy. Once the flavor develops, strain the syrup into a clean container. Add 1–2 teaspoons to a cup of warm water or tea.
