Papaya Flowers: Traditional Uses, Preparation, Potential Benefits, and Safety

  • by

Introduction

Papaya (Carica papaya) is a tropical plant known for its nutritious fruit, but its flowers have also been used in traditional cooking and herbal practices. In some cultures, papaya flowers are prepared as food or used in traditional remedies for coughs and other common complaints.

Recently, claims have circulated online suggesting that boiling papaya flowers for 25–30 minutes and drinking the liquid twice daily for seven days can produce remarkable health benefits. However, these claims require careful evaluation because scientific evidence in humans remains limited. 1

Step 1: Understand Papaya Flowers

Papaya flowers grow on the papaya tree and may be white, cream-colored, or yellowish. Male and female flowers differ in appearance and function.

Research has identified various plant compounds in papaya flowers, including phenolic compounds and flavonoids. Some laboratory studies suggest biological activity, but this does not establish that drinking papaya-flower tea treats or cures a disease. 2

Step 2: Learn About Traditional Uses

In traditional practices, papaya flowers have been used in different ways, including:

  • As an ingredient in cooked dishes.
  • In traditional preparations intended to soothe coughs.
  • As a subject of research into antioxidant and other biological properties.

These uses reflect traditional knowledge and early scientific investigation. They should not be confused with proven medical treatments.

Step 3: What About Boiling Papaya Flowers for 30 Minutes?

A popular online recommendation suggests boiling papaya flowers for 25–30 minutes and drinking one glass in the morning and another at night for seven days.

However, there is no established, clinically validated recipe or dosage showing that this particular preparation is safe and effective for treating a medical condition.

For this reason, it would be misleading to present the suggested schedule as a proven treatment or promise specific results after seven days.

Step 4: What Potential Benefits Are Being Studied?

Researchers have investigated compounds found in papaya flowers for several possible biological effects.

Antioxidant activity: Some compounds show antioxidant properties in experimental studies. Their effects in the human body require further investigation.

Anti-inflammatory activity: Early research has examined possible anti-inflammatory effects of papaya-flower extracts.

Cough-related effects: A 2024 study investigated an extract of male papaya flowers in mice and reported reduced coughing in an experimental model. This is preliminary animal research, not proof that a homemade tea treats coughs in people. 3

Other potential effects: Researchers have explored additional properties in laboratory studies, but these findings do not demonstrate that papaya flowers can cure chronic illnesses.
