My name is Margaret. I’m 56 years old, and I always believed I understood my only daughter, Emily, better than anyone else.
But sometimes, the people we love most are carrying worries they don’t know how to explain.
Emily was 27 and eight months pregnant. She had once been cheerful, full of plans, and excited about building her future. But after her relationship with Daniel, a wealthy man from our town, everything seemed to change.
She became distant, easily upset, and reluctant to talk about what she was feeling. Some days, she barely left her room. On others, she would go out late at night and return home just before sunrise.
I worried about her constantly.
Daniel had once seemed like the perfect partner. He bought her gifts, arranged holidays, and promised her a comfortable life. But over time, Emily told me that he had become controlling. When she tried to end the relationship, he threatened to share private photographs and damage her reputation.
Then she revealed something that broke my heart: he had ignored her refusal and pressured her into an intimate situation she never wanted.
I wanted to protect my daughter, but I didn’t know how to help her overcome everything she had experienced.
When Emily discovered she was pregnant, she stopped seeing Daniel. Yet the memories of their relationship continued to affect her.
She often said she wasn’t ready to become a mother.
One afternoon, I found her sitting beside the window, staring at the garden.
“Sweetheart,” I said gently, “we can get through this together. You don’t have to pretend to be happy every day.”
She looked at me with tired eyes.
“Mom, everyone keeps talking about the baby, but nobody asks how I’m doing.”
Her words stayed with me long after she walked away.
I realized that I had been so focused on the pregnancy that I hadn’t always listened to the person experiencing it.
Still, I worried about her choices. Emily continued smoking and drinking beer despite being eight months pregnant. I repeatedly encouraged her to seek medical advice and accept support, but every conversation seemed to end in an argument.
Then something else began to trouble me.
Emily started leaving the house at night.
At first, she said she needed fresh air. Later, she simply asked me not to wait up for her. She would return several hours later, sometimes with muddy shoes and a tired expression.
Whenever I asked where she had been, she gave me the same answer.
“Please, Mom. I’ll explain when I’m ready.”
I tried to respect her privacy, but I couldn’t stop wondering what she was keeping from me.
One evening, I noticed that several baby clothes I’d carefully folded had disappeared from her bedroom. A small suitcase was also missing.
I began to worry that she was preparing to leave town without telling me.
That night, when Emily stepped outside, I decided to follow her from a distance.
She took a taxi toward the outskirts of town, where an old maternity hospital had stood abandoned for years. The building was surrounded by weeds, and its faded sign was barely visible beneath the branches of a nearby tree.
I watched Emily walk through a side entrance.
Confused, I approached a window that had been left slightly open.
Inside, I heard a woman’s voice.
“Emily, we need to make a decision soon. Your mother deserves to know what’s happening.”
Emily answered quietly.
“I know. But I need to make sure everything is ready first. Daniel mustn’t discover where we’re going.”
I stopped in my tracks.
Why was Daniel involved? And who else was inside that building?
I moved closer to the window and carefully looked through the opening.
Emily was sitting at a small table covered with papers, folded baby clothes, and an old suitcase. Beside her stood a woman in her sixties who appeared to have once worked as a nurse.
Across from them sat a young woman I had never seen before.
She looked exhausted and worried, holding a small photograph between her fingers.
Emily reached across the table and gently held her hand.
“You don’t have to handle everything alone,” my daughter told her. “We’ll find a way forward.”
The young woman shook her head.
“What if he finds out where I’ve gone?”
“We’ll ask for help,” Emily replied. “But you can’t keep living as though you have no choices.”
The older woman nodded in agreement.
I stood outside, trying to understand what I was seeing.
For weeks, I had believed Emily was hiding something connected to her pregnancy. I had imagined that she wanted to escape her responsibilities or return to Daniel.
Now I began to realize that the truth might be very different.
