Homemade Biscuits

These crispy, golden biscuits are light, buttery, and coated with a delicate layer of sugar. Made with just a handful of pantry ingredients, they’re perfect for enjoying with tea or coffee. No oven? No problem! These biscuits can be cooked in a covered pan on the stovetop.

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt

For Coating

  • 2–3 tablespoons granulated sugar

Step 1: Mix the Wet Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together:

  • Egg
  • Powdered sugar
  • Vegetable oil
  • Vanilla extract

Mix until smooth and creamy.

Step 2: Add the Dry Ingredients

Sift together:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms.

If the dough feels sticky, add 1–2 tablespoons of flour.

Step 3: Shape the Biscuits

Take about 1 tablespoon of dough and roll it into an oval shape.

Use the back of a fork or the tines of a fork to gently press ridges into the top, creating a decorative pattern.

Roll each biscuit lightly in granulated sugar.

Step 4: Cook Without an Oven

  1. Preheat a large, heavy-bottomed pan over low heat for about 5 minutes.
  2. Place a wire rack or metal trivet inside the pan if available.
  3. Line the rack or pan with parchment paper.
  4. Arrange the biscuits, leaving a little space between each one.
  5. Cover the pan tightly with a lid.
  6. Cook on low heat for 20–25 minutes, turning the biscuits halfway through if needed, until golden brown and cooked through.

Alternative: Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 12–15 minutes, if you prefer.

Step 5: Cool

Transfer the biscuits to a wire rack and allow them to cool completely. They will become crisp as they cool.
