Social media is filled with claims that a simple baking soda cream can erase wrinkles, remove age spots, and leave your skin looking “glass-like” overnight. While these posts are tempting, the reality is quite different.
There is no scientific evidence that baking soda can eliminate wrinkles or reverse skin aging. In fact, using baking soda directly on your face too often may do more harm than good.
Why Baking Soda Is Popular
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a common household ingredient known for its cleaning and deodorizing properties. Some people also use it in DIY beauty recipes because it has a fine, gritty texture that can exfoliate the skin.
However, what works for cleaning your kitchen isn’t always suitable for delicate facial skin.
Can Baking Soda Remove Wrinkles?
Unfortunately, no.
Wrinkles develop naturally as we age due to:
- Loss of collagen and elastin
- Sun exposure
- Genetics
- Repeated facial expressions
- Smoking
- Dehydration
Baking soda cannot rebuild collagen or reverse these natural processes.
Why Baking Soda May Be Too Harsh
Healthy skin has a slightly acidic pH (around 4.5–5.5), which helps protect it from bacteria and moisture loss.
Baking soda is alkaline, with a pH of about 8.3. Frequent application may:
- Disrupt the skin’s natural barrier
- Cause dryness
- Lead to irritation and redness
- Increase sensitivity
- Worsen eczema or rosacea in some people
For these reasons, dermatologists generally do not recommend using baking soda as a regular facial treatment.
A Gentler DIY Moisturizing Mask
If you’d like a simple homemade mask to help your skin feel soft and hydrated, try this instead.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon plain yogurt
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 teaspoon finely ground oats
Instructions
- Mix the ingredients until smooth.
- Apply to clean skin.
- Leave on for 10–15 minutes.
- Rinse with lukewarm water.
- Follow with a gentle moisturizer.
This mask won’t erase wrinkles, but it can temporarily improve hydration and leave your skin feeling smoother.
