Why Does the Vagina Smell Bad? 4 Reasons Every Woman Should Know

A change in vaginal odor can be embarrassing or worrying, but it does not always mean something is wrong. The vagina naturally has a mild scent because of its normal bacteria, vaginal fluids, hormones, menstrual cycle, and everyday activity. However, a strong, unpleasant, or suddenly different odor can sometimes be a sign of an infection or another vaginal health concern that should be evaluated.

Understanding the possible causes can help you recognize when a change is normal and when it is time to speak with a gynecologist or other qualified healthcare professional.

1. Bacterial Vaginosis Can Cause a Strong Odor

One of the most common reasons for an unusual vaginal smell is bacterial vaginosis, often called BV.

The vagina naturally contains different types of bacteria. When the normal balance of these bacteria changes, certain bacteria can multiply more than usual. This can lead to bacterial vaginosis.

A classic symptom is a noticeable fishy odor, which may become stronger after sex or during menstruation. Some women also notice thin, grayish-white vaginal discharge.

Other possible symptoms include mild irritation or discomfort, although some women with BV have no symptoms at all.

Bacterial vaginosis is not the same thing as poor hygiene. Excessive washing, vaginal douching, or using scented feminine products can actually disturb the natural vaginal environment and make the problem worse.

If you notice a persistent fishy odor or unusual discharge, a healthcare professional can perform an examination and, when appropriate, recommend testing and treatment.

2. A Yeast Infection May Change Vaginal Discharge and Smell
