Vaginal yeast infections are another common vaginal health problem. They are usually associated with an overgrowth of Candida yeast.
Unlike bacterial vaginosis, a typical yeast infection does not usually cause a strong fishy smell. Instead, women often experience intense itching, burning, redness, soreness, and thick white discharge that may resemble cottage cheese.
Some women may notice a slightly different odor because of changes in vaginal discharge, but a strong unpleasant smell is more suggestive of another problem.
It is important not to automatically assume that itching or discharge is a yeast infection. Several vaginal conditions can produce similar symptoms, and using the wrong treatment may delay the correct diagnosis.
If symptoms are severe, recurrent, or do not improve after appropriate treatment, professional medical advice is recommended.
3. Sex, Sweat, Periods, and Hormonal Changes Can Affect Odor
Not every change in vaginal odor is caused by an infection.
Sexual activity can temporarily change vaginal pH because semen has a different pH from the normal vaginal environment. Lubricants, condoms, menstrual blood, sweat, and natural vaginal discharge can also temporarily alter the way the genital area smells.
Hormonal changes during menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause may also influence vaginal moisture, discharge, and odor.
Sweat can be another factor. The external genital area contains sweat glands, and tight clothing, prolonged exercise, hot weather, or staying in damp underwear can create a stronger body odor around the vulva.
Simple habits can help. Change out of sweaty or wet clothing, choose breathable underwear, keep the external genital area clean with gentle products, and avoid putting soaps, perfumes, deodorants, or other products inside the vagina.
Remember that the vagina is self-cleaning. You do not need to wash inside it to keep it healthy.
