Classic Southern Okra and Tomatoes

Does anybody still cook okra and tomatoes this way? 🍅 It’s one of those simple, old-fashioned garden recipes that never needed anything fancy. Tender okra, juicy tomatoes, sweet onion, and simple seasonings come together in one skillet for a comforting side dish.

This classic combination is commonly prepared by sautéing onion, adding okra and tomatoes, and gently simmering everything until tender.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh okra, sliced into ½-inch pieces
  • 3 large ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or bacon grease
  • ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika, optional
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
  • ½ cup water or vegetable broth, if needed
