A man left his wife alone at a motorway rest area because she was taking too long – Three hours later, he called her yelling, « What have you done?! »

  • by

For years, I made excuses for my husband’s temper, his broken promises, and his tendency to blame me whenever something went wrong. I thought it was worth it to keep the peace. But a family trip pushed me further than I ever imagined, and the decision I made afterward changed everything between us.

My husband had been gone for three hours when he finally called.

« What have you done?! » Eric yelled.

I was sitting at a motorway rest area, my eyes glued to my phone.

« What are you talking about? »

« Don’t pretend you don’t know, Amy! »

Three hours earlier, he had left me there without my purse, my keys or my wallet.

« Don’t pretend you don’t know, Amy! »

Now he was furious with me.

***

Three hours earlier, I was standing in front of this same rest area, my eyes fixed on an empty parking space.

Eric and I were driving five hours to go to my little sister Sandra’s house for a family weekend. We had been driving for about two hours.

Our daughter, Ariana, was already there. At 22, she was living on her own, but she still loved spending her weekends with her family.

Now he was furious with me.

Eric was 43, I was 41, and we had been married for 16 years.

He had been late to almost all of our appointments since the beginning of our marriage.

Restaurant reservations, appointments, flights, and school concerts had all suffered because Eric could never leave on time.

Once, he made us miss Ariana’s birthday dinner because he spent 40 minutes looking for his watch.

He had it on his wrist from the beginning.

He had been late to almost all of our appointments since the beginning of our marriage.

Everyone was waiting for Eric.

I’ve always done it.

But lately, his behavior had become increasingly difficult to excuse.

He would get annoyed when I asked him simple questions. He would roll his eyes when I spoke and act as if I was interrupting him in the middle of something important.

***

That morning, he had delayed our departure by almost an hour because he couldn’t find his sunglasses.

But lately, his behavior had become increasingly difficult to excuse.

They were placed on the kitchen counter.

When I showed them to him, he flew into a rage.

« You don’t need to make me look like an idiot, Amy. »

« I was just trying to help you find them. »

« Then get in the car. We’re already late. »

I wanted to remind him whose fault it was.

« I was just trying to help you find them. »

Instead, I went upstairs.

***

Around noon, Eric parked at a motorway rest area.

« Five minutes, » he said.

I laughed because I thought he was joking.

But no.

« Eric, there might be a queue. »

« So don’t delay too long. »

I laughed because I thought he was joking.

The women’s toilets were packed. I waited my turn and left quickly.

Nine minutes had passed.

Our car had disappeared.

I checked the parking lot, thinking he had parked somewhere else.

Then my phone vibrated.

« You need to learn not to keep people waiting. »

Our car had disappeared.

I stared at the message.

I called him.

He refused the appeal.

I tried again.

He refused that call as well.

« Eric, come back. My purse and keys are in the car. »

He refused the appeal.

His reply arrived two minutes later.

« Perhaps you’ll remember that next time. »

My wallet, my jacket, my suitcase and my house keys were all in his car.

« But what’s wrong with this man? »

I had my phone and 20 dollars slipped into its case.

Eric had seen me leave my handbag in the car.

I started typing an apology message.

« Perhaps you’ll remember that next time. »

Then I stopped.

I had waited for this man countless times without ever considering leaving him behind.

I wasn’t going to apologize for needing to go to the bathroom.

I found a bench near the entrance and called Sandra.

***

« Please tell me you’re almost there, » Sandra replied. « Ariana keeps asking when you’re going to arrive. »

« Sandra, I need you to come and get me. »

I wasn’t going to apologize for needing to go to the bathroom.

« What happened? »

« Eric dropped me off at a rest area. »

« What do you mean, he left you there? »

« He left because I spent nine minutes in the bathroom. »

There was a silence.

« Amy, where are you? »

« What happened? »

I told him where I was.

« Are you safe? »

« Yes. I’m sitting in front of the main building. »

« Go inside. I’ll come get you. »

« You’re almost three hours away by car. »

« Then I’d better leave right away. Ariana will take care of dinner. Stay inside, sis. I’ll be right back. »

« Are you safe? »

I had tears in my eyes.

« Please don’t tell everyone that Eric is stuck in traffic. »

« Why would I tell them that? »

« Because that’s what I would usually say. »

Sandra remained silent.

Then she asked, « How long have you been making excuses for him? »

« Why would I tell them that? »

I saw a family get into their car. The husband held the door open for his wife.

« Longer than I should have. »

***

After hanging up, I bought a coffee with my emergency money and sat down near the front windows.

I was still hoping that Eric would turn back.

But instead, Sandra sent me a text message.

« Ariana wants to know why I’m leaving. What should I tell her? »

I saw a family get into their car.

I kept my eyes fixed on the question.

I even told Ariana that some things were my fault, because I didn’t want her to blame her father.

This time, I typed something different.

« Tell him what happened. She’s 22, Sandra. I don’t want you lying for him either. »

I sent the message.

« Tell him what happened. »

***

Ariana called me about 20 minutes later.

« Mom, are you really all alone at a rest stop? »

« I’m inside the building. Aunt Sandra is on her way, darling. »

« Why did Dad leave? »

« He was angry because it took me more than five minutes. »

« Did he at least answer your calls? »

« Mom, are you really all alone at a rest stop? »

 » No.  »

« I’m going to call him. »

« Ari, you don’t need to get involved. »

« Mom, he left you three hours away from Aunt Sandra’s. I’m already involved. »

I understood why she was angry.

« Ask her anything you want, » I told her. « But please don’t drive. Aunt Sandra is coming. »

« I’m going to call him. »

« I’m staying here. I just want to hear what he has to say. »

***

I was looking at the clock. Eric still hadn’t called.

Three hours after he left, my phone rang.

Eric had already arrived at Sandra’s house. Ariana had already had a discussion with him.

It was him.

« What have you done?! » he yelled.

« I’m staying here. I just want to hear what he has to say. »

« Ariana just yelled at me! Sandra told everyone what happened. Do you realize what you’ve done? »

« I told Sandra where you left me. »

« Now our daughter thinks I’m some kind of monster! »

« Did you tell him why you left by car? »

« Your sister had no right to involve everyone in this! »

« I called her because I needed someone to come and get me. »

« I told Sandra where you left me. »

« You should have called me! »

« I did it, Eric. Three times. You refused all my calls. »

He fell silent.

Then he said, « You could have waited until I calmed down. »

« I’ve been waiting for three hours. »

« Do you want me to apologize in front of everyone? »

« You should have called me! »

« I was expecting you to come back for me, Eric. »

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

Then he hung up.

He hadn’t asked me if I’d eaten or if Sandra was around. All he cared about was that the family knew.

He had called because he was humiliated.

« I was expecting you to come back for me, Eric. »

***

Twenty minutes later, Sandra arrived.

She rushed inside and hugged me.

 » How are you ?  »

« I’m just glad you’re here. »

She took my hand.

« Come on, let’s go. I’ll take you home. »

 » How are you ?  »

Once in her car, Sandra handed me a bottle of water.

For a while, we drove without speaking.

Then I asked, « Have you ever thought that Eric was treating me badly? »

She glanced at me.

 » Yes.  »

« Why didn’t you say anything? »

« Have you ever thought that Eric was treating me badly? »

« Yes, Amy. »

 » When ?  »

« At Ariana’s graduation dinner last spring. Remember when Eric kept interrupting you? »

I remembered.

He had joked that I couldn’t do anything without him.

Everyone laughed.

« Yes, Amy. »

Me too.

« You told me I was worrying for nothing, » Sandra continued.

« I remember saying that. »

« I tried to bring it up again afterwards. You barely called me for weeks, Amy. What else was I supposed to do? »

« I thought I was protecting my marriage. »

« From me? »

« What else was I supposed to do? »

« So that people wouldn’t know things weren’t as good as I made them believe. I tried to make him happy for years, Sandra. I just don’t know where it went wrong. »

Sandra kept her eyes fixed on the road.

« I wasn’t asking you to have a perfect marriage, Amy. I just wanted to know if you were happy. »

I swallowed.

« I haven’t been happy lately. »

She agreed.

« I just wanted to know if you were happy. »

« So maybe it’s time you stopped pretending. »

***

We arrived at Sandra’s house in the early evening. Eric’s car was parked in front of the house, and my jacket was still inside.

« Do you want me to go get your things? » Sandra asked.

« No. I’ll ask Eric. »

Inside, Ariana came straight towards me.

« Do you want me to go get your things? »

She hugged me very tightly.

« Mom, I was worried sick. »

« I’m sorry you had to worry. »

« Why are you apologizing? It was Dad who left you there. »

I hugged her for a moment.

Then she asked me if we could talk in private.

We went to the guest room.

« Mom, I was worried sick. »

***

« Dad told me you were exaggerating, » she told me.

« What else did he say? »

« That you were taking too long and that he needed to teach you something. »

I sat down on the bed.

Ariana looked at me.

« Do you remember my birthday dinner, when everyone had already finished eating before we arrived? »

I sat down on the bed.

 » Yes.  »

« Dad told me you hadn’t managed to get ready in time. »
