Air Fryer Blooming Onion

Step 1: Cut the Onion

  1. Peel the onion, leaving the root end intact.
  2. Place the onion root-side down on a cutting board.
  3. Starting about ½ inch (1 cm) from the root, make four evenly spaced cuts down to the board.
  4. Cut each quarter into 3–4 sections to create 12–16 petals.
  5. Gently separate the petals with your fingers.

Step 2: Prepare the Coating

  1. In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne (if using), salt, and black pepper.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk.

Step 3: Coat the Onion

  1. Dust the onion thoroughly with the flour mixture, making sure to coat between all the petals.
  2. Dip the onion into the egg mixture, allowing it to seep into the layers.
  3. Coat again with the seasoned flour, covering every petal for maximum crispiness.

Step 4: Air Fry

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes.
  2. Lightly spray the onion with cooking spray or brush with olive oil.
  3. Place the onion in the air fryer basket, root-side down.
  4. Air fry for 18–22 minutes, or until the petals are golden brown and crispy.

Step 5: Serve

Carefully remove the blooming onion from the air fryer and let it cool for 2–3 minutes before serving.
