At 4:17 a.m., the hospital called.
Lily was stable.
The doctor said the medication had caused severe drowsiness and dehydration.
She would recover.
But she needed observation.
I sat beside her bed.
Mason was asleep in the chair beside me.
Then my phone rang again.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?”
A woman’s voice whispered:
“Evelyn?”
I froze.
“Marissa?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“You’re alive.”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“I need you to listen.”
“I’m listening.”
“Brian isn’t alone.”
My heart sank.
“Who is with him?”
“I don’t know.”
“What happened?”
“He found out I was going to report him.”
“Report him for what?”
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Money.”
“What money?”
“The money your father left.”
I stared at the hospital wall.
“My father?”
“Your grandfather’s estate.”
I sat up.
“What does Brian have to do with my grandfather?”
“Everything.”
“What are you talking about?”
“He didn’t just want the house.”
She took a shaky breath.
“He wanted something hidden inside it.”
Part 7 — The Box
The next morning, detectives searched the farmhouse.
I met them there.
One officer walked into my grandfather’s study.
“Commander.”
I turned.
He was holding an old wooden box.
“Have you seen this?”
“No.”
He placed it on the desk.
It had a brass lock.
My grandfather’s initials were carved into the lid.
S.C.
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Property records.
Photographs.
And one sealed envelope.
The detective opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter dated 2011.
My grandfather had written:
Robert,
I know what you’ve done.
My father.
The detective continued reading.
The money you took will be returned. I have copies of every transaction.
My hands went cold.
Another document showed transfers from my grandfather’s accounts.
Money had been moved into an account controlled by my father.
For years.
The detective looked at me.
“This changes everything.”
I stared at the papers.
“My father stole from him.”
“Yes.”
“And Brian knew?”
“We don’t know yet.”
I remembered the note on the kitchen counter.
Don’t believe her about the closet.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
They weren’t trying to hide Mason.
They were trying to silence him.
Because he had seen something.
Something about the money.
Something about the farmhouse.
Something about the past.
Then my phone rang.
It was Marissa.
I answered.
“Marissa?”
Her voice was barely audible.
“Evelyn…”
“Yes?”
“I know where Brian is.”
“Where?”
She whispered the name of a storage facility.
Then she said,
“He has Mason’s school records, your grandfather’s documents, and…”
She stopped.
“What?”
“Your grandfather’s original will.”
Part 8 — The Original Will
The detective’s face changed when I told him.
“Where is this storage facility?”
I gave him the address.
Within minutes, police vehicles were moving.
I stayed behind with Lily and Mason.
At 9:43 a.m., my phone rang.
The detective.
“We found Brian.”
My heart stopped.
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
“Marissa?”
“We found her too.”
I closed my eyes.
“Is she hurt?”
“She’s shaken but alive.”
“What about the documents?”
“We have them.”
“And Brian?”
There was a pause.
“He’s under arrest.”
I sat down.
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Then the detective said something unexpected.
“There’s more.”
“What?”
“We found a second envelope.”
“From my grandfather?”
“Yes.”
“What does it say?”
The detective was silent.
Then:
“It says your grandfather knew this would happen.”
