Classic Watergate Salad Recipe

The dessert in the photo is most commonly called Watergate Salad, though many families know it by other names such as:

  • Pistachio Fluff
  • Pistachio Delight
  • Green Fluff Salad
  • Holiday Fluff Salad
  • Shamrock Salad (around St. Patrick’s Day)

It’s a classic American no-bake dessert that became especially popular in the 1970s. Many families make it for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, potlucks, and holiday dinners. Adding maraschino cherries at Christmas—just like your mom did—is a beloved family variation.

Classic Watergate Salad Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 package (3.4 oz) instant pistachio pudding mix
  • 1 can (20 oz) crushed pineapple, with the juice
  • 1 container (8 oz) whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • ½ cup chopped pecans (plus extra for garnish)
  • ½ cup maraschino cherries, drained and halved (optional, but perfect for the holidays)

Instructions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry pistachio pudding mix with the crushed pineapple and its juice. Stir until the pudding mix dissolves.

Step 2

Fold in the whipped topping until smooth and creamy.

Step 3

Add the mini marshmallows, chopped pecans, and cherries (if using).

Step 4

Mix gently until everything is evenly combined.

Step 5

Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (overnight is even better) to allow the flavors to blend and the marshmallows to soften.

Step 6

Before serving, garnish with extra pecans, mini marshmallows, and a few cherries for a festive presentation.

Tips

  • Chill overnight for the best flavor and texture.
  • Toast the pecans for extra crunch and a richer nutty flavor.
  • You can substitute walnuts for pecans if preferred.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

This sweet, creamy, fluffy dessert is a nostalgic holiday favorite that has been passed down through generations, and it’s easy to see why—it comes together in just minutes and always disappears quickly at family gatherings.
