My voice began shaking.
“Ryan, she’s your daughter. What are you talking about?”
He looked directly at Melissa.
Then he turned toward me.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t do this. I’m not taking the baby home.”
And he carefully placed her back into my arms.
With tears filling her eyes, Melissa demanded to know WHY they couldn’t take their daughter home.
Ryan exhaled, his face turning red.
Then he said:
“Look at HER BACK. We can’t DO THIS.”
I carefully turned the baby and looked at her back.
My stomach dropped.
There was something there none of us had noticed at first.
Melissa leaned closer.
Then she screamed so loudly that people throughout the hospital could hear her.
And when the doctor rushed into the room and saw what Ryan had noticed, his expression changed immediately.
That was when I realized Ryan wasn’t refusing his daughter because he didn’t want her.
