Our Last Evening
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky a vibrant orange, David smiled at me across the table. “I have a surprise for you tonight,” he said, his eyes twinkling with excitement.
My heart raced. This week had been a whirlwind of emotions, and the thought of one last special moment sent a thrill through me. “What is it?” I asked, my curiosity piqued.
“Patience, my dear,” he teased, lifting his glass of wine. “Let’s savor this moment first.”
We clinked our glasses, the sound resonating like a promise in the air. I glanced around the restaurant, with its twinkling fairy lights and the distant sounds of the harbor. It felt intimate, like a scene from a romantic film.
“I can’t believe how much we’ve shared this week,” I said, my voice softening. The laughter, the secrets, the unguarded moments—they felt like a tapestry woven with threads of joy and sorrow.
David nodded. “Every moment with you has been a gift.” His gaze held mine, and for a fleeting moment, I forgot about the nagging doubts in the back of my mind.
But as I opened my mouth to ask him about the photograph I’d found, his phone buzzed on the table. He glanced at the screen, his expression shifting. “I need to take this,” he said, standing abruptly. My heart sank as he walked away, leaving me in a whirlpool of anticipation and concern.
Fifteen minutes felt like an eternity. I sipped my wine, tapping my fingers nervously on the table. What could be so urgent? A part of me wanted to hang back, to give him space, but the other part urged me to follow.
Unraveling Secrets
I slipped quietly from the table and followed him through the restaurant’s winding pathways. My heart pounded in my chest. What if he was hiding something from me? What if that photograph meant more than he let on?
As I stepped into the courtyard, I heard him speaking in low tones. I edged closer, pressing myself against the wall to remain unseen. His voice was smooth yet strained.
“She doesn’t know… I can’t let her find out,” he murmured.
My breath caught in my throat. Who was he talking to? And what was it that I didn’t know?
Then I heard a second voice, a woman’s voice, wrapped in mystery. “It’s for the best, David. Just keep her away from this.”
“But she’s just so…”
“Just keep her out of it. You know why,” the woman insisted, her tone sharp. “She’s not ready.”
Every heartbeat echoed in my ears as I strained to catch more of their conversation. Then suddenly, my name cut through the air, sharp as a knife. “Mary, she’s… Mary doesn’t deserve this.”
Confusion washed over me like a tidal wave. What did he mean? My stomach twisted painfully. Was everything we shared a lie? I felt a betrayal rising inside me, mingled with heartbreak and anger.
Just as the weight of his revelation sank in, I saw a familiar face in the distance—it was my daughter, who had secretly come to find me. The shock of her presence sent chills down my spine.
