PART 2 — THE NOTE ON THE DOOR
The ladle struck the glass.
Once.
Twice.
The small window cracked but didn’t break.
Mariana’s breathing became shallow.
The heat was becoming unbearable.
She struck the glass again.
This time, it shattered.
Fresh air rushed through the opening.
She pressed her face toward it and breathed.
Then she heard something.
A car.
For a second, hope surged through her.
“HELP!”
The car continued down the road.
Mariana looked at the broken window.
She could see the driveway, but the house was too far away for anyone to hear her clearly.
Then a cramp tightened across her abdomen.
She froze.
This one was different.
It didn’t disappear.
Another followed.
Mariana looked down at her stomach.
“No…”
She knew what was happening.
The contractions had begun.
She reached for her phone.
No signal.
She tried again.
Nothing.
Her hands were trembling.
Then she remembered what her father had taught her.
Don’t waste your strength on panic.
So she stopped trying to break the door.
Instead, she grabbed the sheet of paper Teresa had taped beside the padlock.
She pulled it loose.
She folded it carefully.
Then she placed it inside the waistband of her clothing, protecting it from the sweat soaking everything around her.
That piece of paper was no longer just an insult.
It was evidence.
And she knew it.
Another contraction came.
Mariana lowered herself carefully onto the floor.
She breathed slowly.
“I need to get out.”
She looked around.
The small room contained a bucket, a wooden bench, a towel, and a metal water container.
Nothing else.
Then she noticed something beneath the bench.
A loose wooden board.
She pulled it.
Nothing.
She pulled again.
The board shifted.
Underneath was a narrow gap leading toward the outside.
Not large enough for an adult.
But perhaps large enough to reach the latch mechanism.
Mariana crawled toward it.
Her fingers slipped through the gap.
She couldn’t reach the lock.
She tried again.
Nothing.
Then another contraction hit.
She closed her eyes.
“Not here.”
She whispered it again.
“Not here.”
She refused to let fear take over.
Then she heard a voice.
“Mariana?”
She stopped breathing.
Someone was outside.
“Mariana!”
It was her neighbor, Rosa.
Mariana screamed.
“ROSA!”
Footsteps ran toward the steam room.
“What happened?”
“I’m locked in!”
Rosa grabbed the door.
“Who locked you in?”
“Teresa!”
Rosa looked at the padlock.
Her expression changed.
“Are you pregnant?”
“Yes!”
“How far?”
“Thirty-eight weeks!”
Rosa immediately called emergency services.
Within minutes, the police and paramedics arrived.
The lock was cut.
The door opened.
Mariana collapsed into the arms of the paramedic.
“I’m having contractions.”
The paramedic checked her.
“We need to move now.”
As they carried her toward the ambulance, Mariana reached into her clothing.
The folded paper was still there.
She held onto it tightly.
