When my daughter showed me her engagement ring, I honestly didn’t know what to say.
Her fiancé had clearly put thought into choosing it, and I could see that he wanted to give her something special. But the moment I looked at the ring, my first thought was:
“Is that really the ring he’s giving her?”
It looked smaller than I expected, and personally, I didn’t find the design particularly beautiful.
I know that sounds harsh.
A mother wants the best for her daughter, and when it comes to something as meaningful as an engagement ring, emotions can get complicated very quickly.
The Moment She Showed Me the Ring
My daughter was excited when she showed it to me.
She wasn’t complaining.
She wasn’t disappointed.
She was simply happy to have received it.
I looked at the ring carefully before finally telling her what I thought.
I told her that, in my opinion, it looked too small and that I didn’t think it was especially attractive.
I suggested that she talk to her fiancé about possibly choosing something different.
She immediately refused.
She didn’t want to say anything to him.
And that’s when I started wondering whether I was actually helping her—or simply imposing my own expectations on her relationship.
Maybe Size Isn’t What Matters
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that an engagement ring isn’t really about how large the stone is.
It’s about what it represents.
Someone chose that ring because they wanted to ask my daughter to spend the rest of her life with them.
Maybe he had a limited budget.
Maybe he thought the design suited her.
Maybe he spent weeks looking at different rings before deciding on that particular one.
And perhaps what matters most is that she loves it.
But What About Wanting Something Better?
