Lemon and Garlic Drink: A Simple Recipe for a Healthy Routine

  • by

Peel one or two fresh garlic cloves and crush them lightly with the flat side of a knife. Allow the crushed garlic to sit for several minutes before preparing the drink.

Step 2: Prepare the lemon

Wash the lemon thoroughly and squeeze the juice into a cup. You can also add a thin slice of lemon for extra flavor.

Step 3: Add warm water

Pour approximately one cup of warm water into the cup. Avoid using boiling water if you want a more pleasant drink.

Step 4: Combine the ingredients

Add the crushed garlic and lemon juice to the warm water. Stir thoroughly.

If you find the taste too strong, add a teaspoon of honey. A few mint leaves can also make the drink more refreshing.

Step 5: Let it stand briefly

Allow the drink to sit for several minutes so the flavors can blend.

Step 6: Drink it comfortably

You can enjoy the drink in the evening, but there is no established requirement to take it immediately before bed. If lemon or raw garlic gives you heartburn or stomach discomfort, it may be better to have it earlier in the day or with food.

Can Lemon and Garlic Lower Cholesterol?

Garlic has been studied for its potential effects on cardiovascular risk factors, including cholesterol. Some garlic preparations may produce modest changes in cholesterol levels, but results vary.

A homemade lemon-and-garlic drink should not be used instead of prescribed cholesterol medication or dietary changes recommended by a healthcare professional.

For better long-term cholesterol management, focus on a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, and sources of unsaturated fats, while limiting excess saturated and trans fats.

Can It Lower Blood Pressure?

Garlic has also been investigated for its potential blood-pressure effects. Some concentrated garlic preparations have shown modest benefits in research, but a homemade drink is not a reliable treatment for hypertension.

If you have high blood pressure, continue taking prescribed medication and monitor your blood pressure as recommended.

Will It Help You Sleep?

There is no strong evidence that drinking lemon and garlic before bed directly treats insomnia or reliably makes people fall asleep faster.

For better sleep, consistent sleep and wake times, limiting caffeine later in the day, reducing bright screens before bed, and keeping the bedroom comfortable are generally more dependable strategies.

A Gentler Evening Version

If raw garlic feels too strong at night, try a milder version:

  • 1 cup warm water
  • Juice from ½ lemon
  • ½–1 small garlic clove, finely crushed
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • A few mint leaves

You can also simply use garlic in your evening meal rather than drinking it.

People with acid reflux or a sensitive stomach may find raw garlic and lemon irritating, particularly when consumed shortly before lying down.

This simple drink can be a flavorful way to include garlic and lemon in your diet, but its real value is as part of an overall healthy lifestyle—not as a miracle cure for cholesterol, hypertension, or sleep problems.
