During hot weather, your body loses water through sweat.
If you also have diarrhea or vomiting, you lose even more fluids and electrolytes, increasing the risk of dehydration.
Signs of dehydration include:
- Extreme thirst
- Dry mouth
- Dark yellow urine
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Headache
- Confusion (especially in older adults)
Young children, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable.
How to Stay Hydrated
If you have diarrhea during a heat wave:
- Drink small amounts of water frequently.
- Use oral rehydration solutions if recommended.
- Replace electrolytes when needed.
- Avoid excessive alcohol.
- Limit large amounts of caffeinated beverages if they worsen dehydration.
- Stay in a cool environment whenever possible.
Seek medical attention promptly if you cannot keep fluids down or develop signs of severe dehydration.
