MY EX-HUSBAND INVITED ME TO HIS WEDDING TO HUMILIATE ME—BUT HE DIDN’T KNOW I WAS BRINGING HIS THREE-DAY-OLD DAUGHTER

  • by

I was almost at the entrance when Fiona called after me.

“Elena, wait!”

I stopped but didn’t turn around immediately.

She approached slowly, holding the paternity report.

Her makeup was still perfect, but her eyes were red.

“Did you know about the baby before the divorce?”

“Yes. I discovered the pregnancy shortly before everything was finalized.”

“Then why didn’t you tell him?”

I looked at her.

“Because I had tried to speak to him, and he refused to listen.”

“You could have told me.”

That surprised me.

I almost laughed, but I stopped myself.

“Fiona, you were having an affair with my husband. What exactly did you expect me to tell you?”

She flinched.

“I didn’t think he would leave you without knowing.”

“He did.”

Her gaze dropped to Grace.

“She’s beautiful.”

“Thank you.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Fiona asked the question I suspected had been troubling her since she first read the report.

“Does he have any rights to her?”

I answered carefully.

“Any questions about paternity, parental responsibilities, and future contact will be handled through the proper legal channels. I’m not going to make decisions about Grace’s future in the middle of a wedding reception.”

Fiona nodded slowly.

Then she glanced back toward Julian.

“He told me you couldn’t have children.”

The words hurt, but they no longer surprised me.

“He told me the same thing for years,” I replied. “After our miscarriages, he treated me as though my body had failed him.”

Fiona pressed her lips together.

“He said you were the reason your marriage ended.”

“Our marriage ended because of the decisions both of us made. But I will not accept responsibility for his affair or the financial questions now being investigated.”

She looked toward the reception hall.

“I don’t know what to do.”

For the first time that day, I felt a flicker of sympathy for her.

But sympathy didn’t mean I had to rescue her from the consequences of her choices.

“You need to decide what kind of life you want, Fiona. And you need to ask Julian the questions you should have asked before agreeing to marry him.”

She wiped her cheek.

“Do you hate me?”

I considered the question.

“Once, I did.”

“And now?”

“Now I have a daughter who needs me more than I need to hate anyone.”

I turned and walked away.

I didn’t hear whether Fiona followed me.

I didn’t look back.

Outside, the afternoon sun warmed my face. The driver opened the car door, and I settled Grace into her carrier.

She stretched her tiny fingers.

I touched her hand.

“That was quite an introduction to your family, sweetheart.”

Then I laughed softly.

For the first time in a long while, the sound came naturally.

I had not won back my marriage.

I had not made every problem disappear.

But I had finally stopped measuring my worth by whether Julian chose me.

And that mattered more than anything that had happened inside the estate.

PART 7: THE CONSEQUENCES OF HIS CHOICES

Over the following weeks, Julian tried to contact me repeatedly.

Some messages were apologetic.

Others were angry.

Several asked me to meet him privately.

I declined the private meetings and directed communication about Grace through our attorneys.

If Julian wanted to establish a relationship with his daughter, he would need to demonstrate that he could act responsibly, respect boundaries, and put her welfare first.

His role as her biological father did not automatically entitle him to walk in and out of her life whenever it suited him.

Meanwhile, the financial review continued.

The institutions involved examined the disputed transactions, the company records, and the documents bearing my name.

Rebecca kept me informed as the process moved forward.

Some transactions had legitimate explanations. Others required further documentation. At least one transfer raised serious questions about whether the authorization had been genuine.

The matter was referred for additional review, and Julian was advised to respond through his legal representatives.

Fiona’s role also came under scrutiny because her business was linked to several of the transactions.

I didn’t know whether she had fully understood what Julian was doing, whether she had knowingly participated, or whether he had misled her as he had misled me.

I wasn’t going to pretend I knew more than the evidence established.

That was for the investigation to determine.

What I did know was that I had protected the records, disputed the transactions, and stopped signing documents simply because my husband told me to trust him.

Julian’s wedding did not end with an immediate arrest or a dramatic courtroom confession.

Real consequences rarely arrive so neatly.

Instead, his business relationships became strained, financial questions demanded answers, and his carefully maintained public image began to lose its certainty.

His marriage to Fiona also faced difficult questions.

I heard through mutual acquaintances that the couple had postponed their honeymoon while they dealt with the financial dispute and the sudden discovery of Grace.

I didn’t celebrate that.

I was too busy learning how to be a mother.

Grace woke frequently during the night. She cried when she was hungry, settled when I held her close, and slept best when the house was quiet.

Some mornings were exhausting.

Some afternoons I worried about the future.

But every day brought another little moment that reminded me why I had chosen to protect our peace.

A smile.

A tiny yawn.

The way she wrapped her fingers around mine.

Those moments mattered.

Julian had once convinced me that motherhood was something I would never experience.

He had been wrong.

And I was never going to let his past cruelty define my daughter’s future.
