I stood.
“From tonight onward, every family dinner works one way.”
Everyone watched me.
“You pay for what you order.”
Aaron frowned.
“That sounds unnecessary.”
“No. What’s unnecessary is expecting one person to finance twenty-two adults because she’s too polite to complain.”
Chloe scoffed.
“You’re making us sound horrible.”
I smiled.
“You aren’t horrible.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“You’re simply accustomed to something that was never yours.”
That silenced her.
I turned toward the waiter.
“I’d like the bill divided by person.”
The waiter nodded.
“Of course.”
Immediately, the table erupted.
“What?”
“You can’t do that!”
“I didn’t bring my wallet!”
“My husband has the card!”
“I’m not paying eighty dollars for food I barely touched!”
I sat down.
Exactly the way they had always sat while waiting for me to pay.
Lucas leaned close.
“Please, just pay it this once.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“You’re embarrassing everyone.”
I looked at him.
“They’ve been embarrassing me for eighteen months.”
PART 5 — THE SURPRISE
Then Lucas’s phone rang.
He stepped away from the table.
A minute later, he returned looking completely different.
All the color had drained from his face.
“What happened?” I asked.
He stared at me.
“Your card…”
“My card?”
“The restaurant tried the backup family card.”
I frowned.
“That account was closed last month.”
His eyes widened.
“Closed?”
“Yes.”
“You never told me.”
“I wasn’t supposed to.”
He stared at me as if the ground had shifted beneath him.
I leaned closer.
“Lucas, do you remember when you asked me to add your mother and siblings as authorized users on my business account?”
He nodded slowly.
“I removed them.”
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I watched him realize that the expensive dinners hadn’t simply been funded by me.
They had been funded by a business account connected to my company.
And that account had finally been separated from my personal finances.
Chloe looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Lucas whispered,
“It means none of us can use her account anymore.”
