Thirty-six hours later, Lily opened her eyes.
I was sitting beside her.
I had barely slept.
The monitor continued its steady rhythm.
Then her tiny fingers moved.
I stood immediately.
“Lily?”
Her eyes opened.
She looked confused.
Then she saw me.
“Mommy?”
I broke down.
“Yes.”
Her voice was barely audible.
“Are you here?”
“I’m right here.”
She reached for me.
I took her hand.
“You’re safe.”
She closed her eyes again.
“But you promise?”
I kissed her forehead.
“I promise.”
A doctor entered and examined her.
He told me she still needed close observation, but she was responding.
I cried again.
This time, from relief.
Outside the room, Daniel was waiting.
He had heard everything.
When he came inside, he approached slowly.
“Can I see her?”
I looked at him.
Then at Lily.
She opened her eyes.
“Daddy?”
Daniel began crying.
He touched her tiny hand.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
She squeezed his finger.
For a moment, none of us spoke.
Then Daniel looked at me.
“I have to make this right.”
I nodded.
“You do.”
Part 10 — The Arrest
Patricia was arrested and charged in connection with the assault and the circumstances surrounding Lily’s injuries.
The investigation continued.
The security footage became central evidence.
So did the messages.
The notebook.
The emails.
And Daniel’s statement.
He told police everything.
Including the conversations he’d previously dismissed as his mother’s concern.
Weeks later, I sat in the courtroom.
Patricia looked smaller than I remembered.
She avoided my eyes.
The judge reviewed the evidence.
Then he looked at her.
“You were given numerous opportunities to step away from this situation.”
Patricia said nothing.
“You chose instead to interfere with this child’s mother.”
He paused.
“And your actions resulted in a medical emergency involving an infant.”
I held Lily’s hand.
She was recovering.
Slowly.
But she was recovering.
The judge issued the appropriate orders protecting Lily and me from further contact.
When the hearing ended, Daniel stood beside me.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
I looked at him.
“I don’t know if I can.”
He nodded.
“But I want to earn your trust back.”
I looked at Lily.
“Then start by protecting her.”
“I will.”
“And don’t ever make me fight alone again.”
Daniel swallowed.
“I won’t.”
