That evening, I called my mother.
She answered immediately.
“Claire?”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Silence.
“Tell you what?”
“About my father.”
Her breathing changed.
“Who have you been talking to?”
“Richard Hale.”
Another silence.
Then she whispered,
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
“Your father.”
“He loved me.”
“You don’t know what he was like.”
“I know he searched for me.”
My mother’s voice broke.
“He was going to take you away.”
“He had custody.”
“He was your father.”
“So were you.”
Silence.
Then I said,
“Why did you lie?”
She started crying.
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Losing you.”
I closed my eyes.
“You didn’t lose me.”
My voice trembled.
“You hid me.”
She said nothing.
“And every year you watched me wonder why my father didn’t love me.”
“I thought eventually you’d stop asking.”
“I never stopped.”
I hung up.
Part 10 — The Final Letter
Two weeks later, Richard handed me one last envelope.
“This was found in your father’s safe.”
My name was written on the front.
I opened it.
Claire,
If you’re reading this, you’re eighteen.
I smiled through tears.
I don’t know where you are.
I don’t know whether you’ll ever know me.
But I need you to understand one thing.
I never left you.
I stopped reading.
Then continued.
If someone tells you that I didn’t want you, don’t believe them.
You were the best thing that ever happened to me.
I spent every year searching for you.
Every birthday. Every Christmas. Every night.
Then the final paragraph:
I don’t know what kind of woman you’ll become. But I know this: you will be stronger than the people who tried to make you feel small.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
Richard sat silently beside me.
After a long moment, I whispered,
“He knew me.”
“Yes.”
“Even when I didn’t know him.”
“Yes.”
I looked at the photograph of my father.
For eighteen years, I had believed I was unwanted.
Now I knew the truth.
I had been wanted so desperately that someone had spent years trying to keep me hidden.
