Three weeks before the wedding, I had started keeping every message from my family.
At first, I thought I was simply protecting myself from their pressure.
Then Fernanda sent me a message.
“If you don’t convince Alejandro to buy the SUV, I’ll make sure you regret it.”
I had saved it.
Then came another.
“Don’t forget about your allergy.”
I saved that too.
But there was something else.
The day before the wedding, Fernanda had sent a voice message.
Her voice was unmistakable.
She said:
“I know exactly what happens when she gets exposed to that spray. She’ll panic. Maybe then she’ll finally understand that she can’t keep saying no to us.”
My father had responded.
“Don’t do anything stupid.”
Then Fernanda replied:
“I’m not trying to kill her. I’m trying to scare her.”
The lawyer played the recording.
Nobody moved.
My father looked at Fernanda.
“You said you wouldn’t…”
Fernanda began crying.
“I didn’t think…”
“You knew!”
My mother turned toward her.
“You knew she could have a serious reaction?”
Fernanda covered her face.
“I just wanted the SUV!”
Alejandro shook his head.
“You were willing to hurt your own sister for a car?”
Fernanda whispered:
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
My father suddenly looked older.
He stared at the floor.
Then he looked at me.
“Valeria…”
I interrupted him.
“No.”
He stopped.
“I spent my entire life thinking obedience was the same thing as respect.”
I took a breath.
“It isn’t.”
My mother started crying.
“We’re your family.”
I looked at her.
“You keep saying that as if it excuses everything.”
Nobody answered.
The police officers stepped forward.
My father tried to argue.
“It was a family dispute.”
The lawyer shook his head.
“No. You have medical records, written threats, an admission that she knew about the allergy, and a physical assault inside a hospital.”
The officer nodded.
“Sir, you’re going to need to come with us.”
My father looked at me one last time.
“You would do this to your own father?”
I looked at him.
“You did this to your own daughter.”
