Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie

Step 1: Prepare the Pie Crust

Bake the pie crust according to the package or homemade recipe instructions until golden brown. Allow it to cool completely before adding the filling.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, and salt until well combined. This helps prevent lumps in the filling.

Step 3: Add the Milk

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking continuously until the mixture is smooth.

Step 4: Cook the Filling

Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble, about 8–10 minutes.

Step 5: Temper the Egg Yolks

Slowly add about 1/2 cup of the hot chocolate mixture into the beaten egg yolks while whisking constantly. This prevents the eggs from scrambling.

Step 6: Finish Cooking

Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan. Continue cooking for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the filling becomes thick and creamy.

Step 7: Add Butter and Vanilla

Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the butter until melted, then mix in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.

Step 8: Fill the Pie

Pour the warm chocolate filling into the cooled pie crust. Use a spatula to spread it evenly.

Step 9: Chill

Cover the surface of the pie with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or until fully set.

Step 10: Serve

Top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings if desired. Slice and enjoy this rich, old-fashioned chocolate pie chilled.

Tips for Success

  • Whisk continuously while cooking to ensure a smooth, lump-free filling.
  • Whole milk creates the richest, creamiest texture.
  • Chill the pie thoroughly before slicing for clean, beautiful pieces.
  • For an extra chocolate flavor, sprinkle grated dark chocolate over the top before serving.

Storage

Store the pie covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. It is best served chilled. Freezing is possible for up to 1 month, though the texture may become slightly softer after thawing.

Enjoy this classic Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie with a cup of coffee or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an unforgettable homemade dessert!
