This is one of those wonderfully old-fashioned recipes that has been passed down through generations. It was originally made by my grandmother and later passed from my mom to me. We grew up eating it, and it has remained a favorite for sandwiches, burgers, wraps, and simple family meals.
The original handwritten instructions were wonderfully simple: “Put in hot jars and seal.” Since older canning instructions may not meet today’s food-safety standards, this version is written as a refrigerator spread rather than a shelf-stable canning recipe.
