Optical illusions are designed to make the brain interpret visual information in unexpected ways. A simple image can sometimes appear to change depending on what you notice first, how you interpret movement, or which visual details your brain prioritizes. This is what makes these images so fascinating—and so popular on social media.
One viral claim suggests that what you see in an optical illusion can reveal whether you have a “male brain” or a “female brain.” The image may show a silhouette appearing to move through a tunnel, while different viewers report noticing different details about the figure or its direction.
But there is an important distinction between an entertaining personality test and a scientifically validated psychological assessment. Seeing one interpretation of an optical illusion does not prove that someone has a masculine or feminine brain.
Your brain constantly makes rapid predictions about what your eyes are seeing. When an image contains ambiguous information, your visual system has to decide how to interpret shapes, movement, depth, lighting, and perspective. Different people can therefore perceive the same image differently.
This can happen because of attention, previous experiences, expectations, viewing conditions, visual processing, and even the way the image is displayed.
The same person may also interpret an illusion differently at different times. If you stare at an ambiguous image long enough, your perception may change. You may suddenly notice movement in another direction or see a different shape than you noticed initially.
That doesn’t mean your brain has changed from “male” to “female” or vice versa.
The idea that people can be divided into two distinct brain types—masculine and feminine—based on a single visual test is an oversimplification. Human brains are highly complex, and individual differences in perception, attention, memory, and reasoning cannot be reduced to one simple category.
There are certainly average differences that have been studied between groups of men and women in some areas of cognition and behavior. However, averages between groups do not mean that every individual fits neatly into one category. There is substantial overlap between individuals.
This is why an optical illusion cannot reliably determine someone’s gender, personality, intelligence, reasoning ability, or brain structure.
What makes the image interesting is not whether it identifies your “brain type,” but how it demonstrates the flexibility of visual perception.
Your eyes collect information from the environment, but your brain is responsible for interpreting that information. It uses clues such as perspective, shadows, contrast, movement, and familiar patterns to construct the visual experience you perceive.
When those clues are ambiguous, different interpretations become possible.
For example, silhouettes can be particularly difficult for the brain to interpret because they contain limited information about facial features, clothing, depth, and body position. The surrounding shadows and perspective lines can also influence how movement is perceived.
Your attention plays an important role as well. If someone tells you to look for a particular feature before you see the image, you may be more likely to notice that feature. This is an example of how expectations can influence perception.
Lighting and screen quality can also change the experience. The same illusion may look slightly different on a bright phone screen compared with a dark computer monitor.
Even the distance between your eyes and the screen can influence what details you notice first.
These factors make optical illusions excellent demonstrations of how perception works, but they make them poor tools for determining someone’s biological sex, personality, or cognitive abilities.
That doesn’t make the test boring. Quite the opposite.
A fun way to use an optical illusion is to show it to friends or family members without telling them what they are supposedly expected to see. Ask each person what they notice first and compare their answers. You may be surprised by how differently people interpret exactly the same picture.
The conversation can then become an interesting demonstration of individual perception rather than a claim about having a “male” or “female” brain.
If an online quiz tells you that seeing one direction means you have masculine reasoning while seeing another means you have feminine reasoning, treat the result as entertainment rather than a medical or psychological diagnosis.
There is no reliable reason to believe that one answer makes someone more logical, emotional, intelligent, intuitive, analytical, or creative.
Human reasoning is influenced by many factors, including education, experience, personality, attention, environment, and individual cognitive differences. No single optical illusion can measure all of that.
So what does your answer actually reveal?
It may reveal how your brain happens to interpret an ambiguous visual stimulus at that particular moment. And that’s fascinating enough without assigning a gender label to it.
The next time you encounter an optical illusion claiming to reveal your “brain type,” enjoy the challenge, compare your interpretation with others, and remember that perception is much more complicated than a simple male-versus-female test.
