PART 2 — WHAT BROOKLYN SAW

That evening, the NICU doctor called Kevin and me into a private room.

“There is something unusual in Rosalie’s medical file.”

“What?”

“Someone requested access to her records last night.”

“Who?”

The doctor looked at the screen.

“Your mother.”

“She isn’t authorized.”

“I know.”

The doctor continued.

“She asked specifically for genetic testing.”

I felt confused.

“Why would she want genetic testing?”

The doctor didn’t know.

But a few hours later, the hospital’s genetic counselor contacted us.

Apparently, an anonymous request had been submitted weeks earlier.

The request was for a DNA comparison between Rosalie and another family member.

The name on the request was hidden.

But the hospital had the original paperwork.

Kevin stared at the form.

Then his face went pale.

The signature belonged to my father.

“Why would Dad want a DNA test on Rosalie?”

Neither of us knew.

Until Courtney called again.

She was crying.

“There’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

“Dad isn’t Rosalie’s grandfather.”

I couldn’t understand.

“What are you saying?”

“Mom told me years ago.”

“Told you what?”

“That you weren’t actually Dad’s biological daughter.”

The room became completely silent.

I looked at Kevin.

My entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.

PART 7 — THE TRUTH ABOUT ME

I confronted my father over the phone.

“Am I your daughter?”

Silence.

That silence answered everything.

“Dad?”

Finally, he said:

“Who told you?”

I started crying.

“So it’s true.”

He sighed.

“Your mother and I were young.”

“Who is my biological father?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“You owe me the truth.”

“He died years ago.”

“Who was he?”

My father refused.

Then I asked the question that mattered most.

“Why does Rosalie’s DNA matter?”

Another silence.

“Because your biological father’s family has a trust.”

My heart stopped.

“The same trust?”

“Yes.”

“And Rosalie?”

“If she is your biological father’s granddaughter, she’s entitled to it.”

I finally understood.

My mother wasn’t trying to protect Courtney.

She was trying to prevent Rosalie from inheriting money.

But there was something even stranger.

My father said:

“Your mother has been trying to find the trust documents for twenty years.”

“Why?”

“Because she believes you were supposed to inherit it.”

“Then why does she hate Rosalie?”

My father whispered:

“Because Rosalie changes everything.”

PART 8 — THE WOMAN WHO CALLED

The unknown woman called again that night.

This time I recorded the conversation.

“You need to stop asking questions.”

“Who are you?”

“Someone who knew your biological father.”

“What’s his name?”

The woman hesitated.

“Daniel.”

My heart raced.

“Daniel what?”

“Daniel Mercer.”

I had never heard that name.

Then she said:

“Your mother knows exactly who he was.”

“Why was she afraid of Rosalie?”

“Because your mother stole something from him.”

“What?”

“A letter.”

“What letter?”

“The letter proving you were his daughter.”

The call ended.

Kevin and I searched everything we could find.

Eventually, the lawyer discovered an old probate case involving Daniel Mercer.

A trust had been established before his death.

The beneficiary was listed as:

His firstborn daughter and her descendants.

My name was never written.

Only one phrase appeared:

“The child born to the woman known as Elizabeth.”

Elizabeth was my mother’s maiden name.

And the trust had never been claimed.

The lawyer looked at me.

“Your mother may have been hiding your identity.”

I felt numb.

All my life, I had believed my family was simply dysfunctional.

Now I realized there had been a financial war happening behind my back.

And my newborn daughter had become the final piece.
