The medical team moved forward with utmost respect. This time, as they unlocked the wheels of the gurney and prepared to wheel Luke’s body out through the double doors of the trauma department, Ranger did not growl or bare his teeth. He remained right beside Hannah, his head held low, his blind guidance relying on the touch of her hand and the familiar rhythm of her steps.
They walked in solemn procession down the wide hospital corridor. Margaret and Claire walked closely behind, holding hands, while Colonel Hale led the military escort in full dress uniform. Hospital staff members, nurses, and doctors paused in the hallways, standing at attention or bowing their heads as the fallen sergeant was escorted toward the rear bay where the military transport van was idling in the cool rain. 🚪
When they reached the vehicle, the honor guard formed a crisp line, raising their hands in a silent, respectful salute. The orderlies carefully loaded the gurney into the back of the transport. Ranger stood at the edge of the bumper, his ears perked up, his body trembling slightly as the cold night air hit his coat.
Margaret stepped up beside Hannah, looking down at the blind German Shepherd and then up at the woman her son had once loved above all else.
“When you left eight years ago,” Margaret said, her voice trembling against the sound of the falling rain, “I thought you abandoned him because you couldn’t handle his physical and emotional scars. Luke never spoke ill of you, but he kept that dog by his side every single day, as if waiting for something.”
Hannah looked down at the pavement, swallowing the lump in her throat. “I thought I was making it easier for him, Margaret. I thought my presence was a constant reminder of the day he lost his team overseas. I made a mistake, a terrible mistake that I’ve lived with every day since. But I never stopped caring about him. And I never forgot Ranger.”
Margaret looked at Hannah for a long moment, the bitterness in her eyes resolving into profound grief and quiet understanding. She reached out and placed a warm hand over Hannah’s hand on Ranger’s harness.
