Seven-Layer Taco Salad

1. Cook the Ground Beef

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add the ground beef and cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon until browned and fully cooked.

Drain any excess grease.

Add the taco seasoning along with the amount of water recommended on the seasoning packet. Stir well and simmer for 2–3 minutes.

Remove from the heat and allow the beef to cool.

2. Make the Taco Dressing

In a small bowl, combine the sour cream, salsa or taco sauce, and 1 tablespoon of taco seasoning.

Stir until smooth and creamy.

Taste and add a little extra salsa or taco seasoning if desired.

3. Prepare the Vegetables

Chop the lettuce into bite-sized pieces.

Dice the tomatoes and bell peppers.

Drain and rinse the black beans thoroughly.

Dice the avocado just before assembling the salad so it stays fresh.

Slice the green onions and chop the cilantro if using.

4. Begin the Layers

Use a large clear glass serving bowl so the colorful layers are visible.

Start with a layer of chopped lettuce on the bottom.

Spread the lettuce evenly across the bowl.

5. Add the Vegetables

Add the diced red and orange bell peppers over the lettuce.

Follow with the black beans and diced tomatoes.

Gently spread each layer so the colors remain distinct.

6. Add the Seasoned Beef

Spoon the cooled taco-seasoned ground beef over the vegetables.

Spread it into an even layer.

7. Add the Creamy Dressing

Carefully spread the sour cream and salsa dressing over the beef.

Use the back of a spoon or a spatula to create an even layer.

8. Add the Cheese and Crunch

Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese generously over the dressing.

Add the crushed tortilla chips for a delicious crunchy layer.

For the freshest texture, you can also wait and add the tortilla chips immediately before serving.

9. Finish With Fresh Toppings

Top the salad with diced avocado, chopped tomatoes, green onions, and fresh cilantro.

For an extra colorful presentation, arrange the toppings neatly across the surface rather than mixing them together.

10. Chill and Serve

Cover the salad and refrigerate for 30–60 minutes before serving.

Serve chilled with additional tortilla chips, salsa, or taco sauce on the side.

For the best texture, especially if preparing it ahead of time, keep the tortilla chips separate until just before serving.

Tip: If you’re making this for a large gathering, prepare the ingredients several hours ahead and assemble the layers shortly before serving. The result is a creamy, crunchy, savory taco salad with a beautiful presentation in every scoop.
