Soursop Leaves Boiled for 7 Minutes: What You Should Know Before Trying This Drink

  • by

Soursop is sometimes used traditionally in herbal preparations for digestive complaints.

However, there is not strong clinical evidence showing that drinking soursop leaf tea reliably eliminates bloating. Bloating can have many causes, including eating habits, constipation, food intolerances, gastrointestinal disorders, and other conditions.

If bloating is frequent, severe, persistent, or accompanied by pain, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, blood in the stool, or other concerning symptoms, it is better to investigate the cause rather than repeatedly treating it with herbal tea.

Does It Improve Circulation?

The claim that soursop leaf tea “supports circulation” is also widespread online, but it should not be interpreted as a proven treatment for poor circulation or cardiovascular disease.

Healthy circulation depends on many factors, including blood pressure, blood vessels, heart function, physical activity, smoking status, cholesterol levels, and overall health.

There is currently insufficient human evidence to recommend soursop leaf tea as a treatment for cardiovascular problems.

Can It Increase Energy?

Some people may enjoy herbal teas as a warm, relaxing beverage, but there is no established evidence that seven-minute soursop leaf tea provides a significant or reliable energy boost.

If you regularly feel unusually tired, the underlying cause may be something that needs attention, such as inadequate sleep, anemia, nutritional deficiencies, medication effects, or another health condition.

How Is Soursop Leaf Tea Traditionally Prepared?

If someone chooses to consume soursop leaves as a traditional beverage, a simple preparation is sometimes made as follows:

Ingredients

  • Fresh soursop leaves
  • Water

Preparation

  1. Select clean, undamaged leaves.
  2. Wash them thoroughly under running water.
  3. Place the leaves in a saucepan containing water.
  4. Bring the water to a gentle boil.
  5. Reduce the heat and simmer briefly.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  7. Strain the liquid carefully.
  8. Allow the tea to cool to a comfortable temperature before drinking.

There is no scientifically established “10 leaves for 7 minutes” dose that has been proven safe and effective for treating a particular medical condition. The popular recipe should therefore not be presented as a medically validated formula.

An Important Safety Consideration

This is where viral social-media recipes often leave out important information.

Soursop leaves contain compounds known as annonaceous acetogenins. Some research has raised concerns about potential neurological effects associated with exposure to these compounds, particularly with repeated or concentrated consumption.

For that reason, drinking large quantities of soursop leaf preparations or consuming them regularly as a medicinal treatment is not something to assume is harmless simply because the ingredient is natural.

Pregnant or breastfeeding people, children, people with neurological conditions, and people taking medications should be especially cautious and should speak with a healthcare professional before using soursop leaf preparations.

People taking medication for diabetes or blood pressure should also avoid using soursop tea as a substitute for prescribed treatment.

Soursop Fruit Is Different From Soursop Leaves

It’s also important not to confuse the fruit with concentrated preparations made from the leaves.

Soursop fruit can be enjoyed as part of a varied diet and provides carbohydrates, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals. Eating a reasonable portion of the fruit is very different from repeatedly consuming a concentrated herbal preparation made from leaves.

The fact that a fruit is nutritious does not automatically mean that every part of the plant is safe to consume in large quantities.

The Bottom Line

Soursop leaf tea has a long history of traditional use, but the popular claim that 10 leaves boiled for seven minutes can control blood sugar, improve circulation, eliminate bloating, and naturally increase energy has not been established by high-quality human research.

If you enjoy soursop, the fruit itself can be a flavorful addition to a balanced diet. For the leaves, however, moderation and caution are important because their biologically active compounds have raised safety questions.

Natural does not always mean risk-free, and a homemade herbal tea should never replace appropriate medical care or prescribed medication.
