The Woman Who Refused To Look Away
Anja Ringgren Løven had already dedicated herself to helping children before she met Hope. Her work in Nigeria was built around a belief that every child deserves dignity, education, and the chance to grow up in a safe environment.
But meeting Hope became a defining moment.
The situation exposed a painful reality: many children accused of witchcraft had nowhere to turn. Some were abandoned, some were abused, and some were left without basic necessities.
Instead of seeing Hope’s story as an isolated tragedy, Anja saw a larger mission.
She and her husband, David, became involved in creating a safe place for children who had been rejected by their communities. Their work eventually led to the establishment of the African Children’s Aid Education and Development Foundation (ACAEDF), an organization dedicated to protecting vulnerable children and giving them opportunities for a better future.
The goal was not only rescue.
The goal was rebuilding lives.
Children who arrived frightened and traumatized were given medical care, education, food, and something many of them had never experienced before: a sense of belonging.
For children who had been told they were unwanted, the organization offered a completely different message.
You matter.
You are valuable.
You have a future.
From Survival To A Second Chance
After Hope was rescued, his recovery was not immediate. Years of neglect had taken a toll on his young body, and rebuilding his health required patience, medical attention, and constant care.
But children are remarkably resilient when they are given love and support.
Slowly, Hope began to heal.
The frightened little boy from the roadside became a child who could laugh, learn, and dream. He grew up surrounded by other children who shared similar experiences, forming a community where they could feel safe.
A photograph from 2013 showed a very different Hope. Instead of a weak child struggling to survive, he was a healthy, smiling boy sitting beside Anja while wearing a Manchester United tracksuit.
The contrast between the two images was powerful.
The first image represented everything that had been taken away from him: security, family, and childhood.
The second represented everything that had been restored: health, happiness, and possibility.
It was proof that one act of compassion could completely change the direction of a life.
