The Sealed File
Part 2 — The Name in the File
I took the tablet from Admiral Mercer.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then I scrolled.
The first page contained the information Hayes had already seen.
Rank.
Assignments.
Medical qualifications.
Deployment history.
Then the screen changed.
A black banner appeared.
SPECIAL ACCESS REQUIRED.
I looked at Mercer.
“Sir?”
He didn’t answer.
I entered the authorization code.
The file opened.
The first photograph was from seven years earlier.
I was younger.
My hair was shorter.
My uniform was covered in dust.
And beside me were six operators.
All six were alive.
Mercer stared at the screen.
“That photograph was never supposed to exist.”
“I know.”
He scrolled.
A mission summary appeared.
OPERATION NIGHT HARBOR
LOCATION: CLASSIFIED
PERSONNEL: CLASSIFIED
OUTCOME: EXTRACTION SUCCESSFUL
Then another line.
MEDICAL OFFICER: HM1 RILEY BENNETT
Mercer stopped.
“You were the only corpsman?”
“Yes, sir.”
“How many casualties?”
“Seven.”
“How many survived?”
“All seven.”
He looked at me.
“That’s not possible.”
“It happened.”
He kept scrolling.
There were reports from commanders.
After-action assessments.
Medical logs.
Evacuation records.
And then one sentence appeared repeatedly.
Without Bennett’s intervention, loss of life would have been catastrophic.
Mercer leaned back.
His face had lost all color.
“You weren’t simply attached to the team.”
“No, sir.”
“You were embedded.”
“Yes.”
“On multiple classified deployments.”
“Yes.”
He stared at me.
“Why wasn’t I informed?”
I gave him a tired smile.
“Because, sir, you weren’t cleared.”
He looked offended.
Then he remembered who was sitting in front of him.
The room became quiet.
Finally, he asked:
“How many missions?”
I looked at the floor.
“Thirty-two.”
His eyes widened.
“Thirty-two?”
“Yes.”
“And how many operators did you personally treat?”
I hesitated.
“Forty-nine.”
Mercer slowly sat down.
“Forty-nine?”
“Some more than once.”
He looked at the scars on my shoulder.
Then at the file.
“That’s why you avoided this evaluation.”
I nodded.
“Partly.”
“What was the other reason?”
I didn’t answer.
He already knew.
