I found my daughter crying in the kitchen, eating scraps from dirty plates while her husband smiled and said, “She deserves it.”

Robert asked Chloe if she had access to the restaurant’s computer system.

She nodded.

“I did the menus, advertising, social media, invoices, staff schedules… everything Damian asked me to do.”

“Do you still have access?”

“No. He changed my password.”

“Do you have copies?”

Chloe hesitated.

“I might.”

She pulled out an old laptop.

Inside were folders dating back more than a year.

Emails.

Invoices.

Design files.

Payroll records.

Messages between Damian and his accountant.

And one folder labeled:

CHLOE — PERSONAL

Robert opened it.

There were photographs.

Not intimate ones.

Photographs of bruises.

Photographs of Chloe sleeping at a desk.

Photographs of her crying in the kitchen.

And screenshots of messages Damian had sent her.

One read:

You don’t deserve to be paid. You’re my wife.

Another:

If you leave, I’ll make sure nobody hires you again.

Then we found something that made Robert sit completely still.

A spreadsheet.

It listed employees who were being paid cash.

Several names had been removed from official payroll records.

Damian had been hiding labor expenses.

Robert looked at me.

“This isn’t just a domestic case anymore.”

PART 5 — THE RECORDING

Chloe suddenly remembered something.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“There are cameras in the kitchen.”

Robert looked up.

“Security cameras?”

“Yes. Damian installed them after accusing employees of stealing.”

“Do they record audio?”

“I don’t know.”

We contacted the restaurant’s former IT technician.

He confirmed the cameras recorded continuously.

And the footage was automatically backed up.

Robert obtained the footage through legal channels.

We watched.

There was Chloe.

Scrubbing floors.

Carrying boxes.

Preparing food.

Cleaning tables.

Working until nearly two in the morning.

Then we saw Damian enter.

He threw a plate onto the floor.

“Pick it up.”

Chloe immediately obeyed.

“You’re embarrassing me.”

“I’ve been working since six this morning.”

“So?”

“I haven’t eaten.”

Damian laughed.

“You can eat what customers leave behind.”

Then he walked away.

Chloe crouched down.

And began crying.

I had to leave the room.

I couldn’t watch my daughter being humiliated again.

But Robert kept watching.

Then he stopped the video.

“There’s more.”

A second camera showed Damian speaking with his manager.

“If she ever goes to the police, make sure everyone says she’s unstable.”

The manager nodded.

Then Damian said something that changed the entire case.

“She has nowhere to go.”

Robert leaned back.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“She does now.”
