PART 2 — THE MISSING DOCUMENTS
Daniel stared at the security footage with his jaw clenched.
“Go back,” he said.
I rewound it.
At 12:07 a.m., Teresa entered the room.
She looked around carefully before opening my filing cabinet.
Then she removed the folder containing the deed to my house.
But she wasn’t alone.
At 12:11, Daniel’s younger brother, Marcos, appeared in the doorway.
Teresa handed him several pages.
Marcos photographed them with his phone.
Then Teresa pointed toward the camera.
My heart stopped.
“She knows about the cameras,” I whispered.
Daniel shook his head.
“No. Look.”
We watched again.
Teresa wasn’t pointing at the camera.
She was pointing at the missing document.
The one she handed Marcos.
Daniel immediately called his brother.
Marcos answered after several rings.
“What?”
Daniel didn’t waste time.
“Why were you in my house last night?”
Silence.
Then Marcos said something that made my stomach drop.
“Because Mom said you were going to sign the house over.”
Daniel looked at me.
“I never said that.”
“I know that now,” Marcos replied.
Then he hung up.
I thought that was the end of it.
It wasn’t.
Twenty minutes later, Marcos called back.
His voice was different.
“Daniel, I need to tell you something before Mom finds out I told you.”
“What?”
“She already had a buyer.”
I felt cold.
“A buyer for what?”
“The house.”
