Marcos explained everything.
Teresa had convinced him that I wasn’t the real owner of the property.
She told him my parents had given the house to both Daniel and me.
She claimed that because Daniel was my husband, he automatically had rights to it.
None of that was true.
But Teresa had found an old copy of a document from the year my parents purchased the property.
She had taken photographs of my deed and donation papers and planned to create the appearance that Daniel had an ownership interest.
Then she intended to pressure us into selling.
Why?
Because Paola and Marcos were drowning in debt.
They had borrowed money for a failed business.
They owed nearly enough to lose their own apartment.
Teresa had decided my house was the solution.
And moving Paola into my bedroom hadn’t been about helping her recover after childbirth.
It had been the first step.
Teresa wanted to establish the idea that the house belonged to the entire family.
She wanted me pushed downstairs.
Then out.
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew none of this?”
His face was pale.
“No.”
He looked devastated.
“I thought Mom was being cruel because she wanted to control everything.”
I shook my head.
“She wanted my house.”
THE SURPRISE WAITING IN THE FILE
The following morning, we went to an attorney.
I brought every document I had.
The original deed.
The donation agreement from my parents.
Tax records.
Property registration.
Everything.
The lawyer examined them carefully.
Then he smiled.
“Your ownership is extremely clear.”
I finally breathed.
But then he noticed something else.
“Where did this copy come from?”
I showed him the paper Teresa had removed.
He studied it.
“This is interesting.”
“What?”
“This isn’t your deed.”
I stared at him.
“What do you mean?”
He turned the document over.
“This is a draft from years ago. It was never registered.”
My eyes widened.
Teresa had been building her entire plan around a document that had no legal authority.
Then the lawyer pointed to the last page.
“There is also something else.”
A signature.
My father’s.
But it wasn’t his signature.
Someone had forged it.
THE CONFRONTATION
That evening, Teresa returned.
She walked into the kitchen as if nothing had happened.
“I’ve been thinking,” she said.
I looked at her.
“About my house?”
She froze.
Daniel stood beside me.
“You went through Valeria’s documents.”
Teresa’s expression hardened.
“I was protecting this family.”
“You stole her papers.”
“I borrowed them.”
“You gave them to Marcos.”
“He needed them.”
“For what?”
She didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mom, what were you planning?”
Teresa finally exploded.
“You were supposed to have children! You were supposed to build a proper family! Instead, she has this enormous house and a little baking business, while your brother has children and nowhere to live!”
I stared at her.
“So because Paola has children, she deserves my home?”
“She is family!”
“So am I.”
Teresa went silent.
Then she said the sentence that ended everything.
“Not anymore.”
Daniel looked at her for several seconds.
“Then neither are you.”
