PART 2 — THE FLATLINE

The monitor screamed.

“Her pressure is seventy over forty!”

“She’s losing too much blood!”

“Start another IV!”

Suddenly, Cameron wasn’t my husband anymore.

He was a doctor standing beside a crashing patient.

And for the first time that night, I saw fear in his eyes.

“Get the hemorrhage cart!” someone shouted.

Cameron stepped toward me.

“Amelia!”

I could barely hear him.

The room was spinning.

My son’s cry had disappeared beneath the alarms.

I felt hands pressing against my abdomen.

Someone shouted for blood.

Someone else called for the operating team.

Then Cameron looked at the nurse.

“What happened?”

She stared at him.

“You refused the C-section.”

His face went pale.

“That isn’t—”

“You refused it twice.”

The nurse’s voice shook with anger.

“We warned you.”

Cameron looked at the monitor.

Then at me.

Then at the tiny newborn being carried toward the neonatal team.

His lips parted.

“Amelia…”

I wanted to answer.

I wanted to tell him I had warned him.

But I couldn’t speak.

The room became darker.

The last thing I heard was the nurse shouting:

“She’s going into hemorrhagic shock!”

Then everything disappeared.

PART 3 — WHAT HAPPENED NEXT

I woke up three days later.

The first thing I saw was a ceiling.

The second thing I felt was pain.

The third thing I heard was a baby’s cry.

My baby.

I tried to move.

A nurse immediately leaned over me.

“Don’t try to sit up yet.”

“My son…”

My voice was barely audible.

“He’s alive.”

I closed my eyes.

A tear slipped down my cheek.

“Is he okay?”

“He was large and had some breathing difficulties initially, but he’s doing well.”

I exhaled.

For the first time in days, I felt something other than fear.

Then I noticed something strange.

Cameron wasn’t there.

“Where’s my husband?”

The nurse hesitated.

“He’s been removed from your care.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“He’s under investigation.”

My heart began pounding.

“Why?”

She looked toward the door.

“Because the hospital reviewed everything that happened in that delivery room.”

Then she quietly added:

“They found the surgical notes.”
