PART 2 — THE FLATLINE

The hospital investigation uncovered everything.

The ultrasound estimates.

The warnings from the nurses.

My repeated requests for a C-section.

The documented concerns about the baby’s size.

And Cameron’s refusal.

But there was more.

Security footage from the hallway showed Sophie entering the delivery area before the medication tray was knocked over.

A nurse had noticed something else.

A small scratch on my arm.

The same place Sophie had dug her nails into me.

At first, Sophie denied everything.

Then the hospital reviewed the medication records.

She had been the one who moved the tray.

She had deliberately created the appearance that I had attacked her.

Why?

Because Sophie had been having an affair with Cameron.

And she believed I was standing between them.

She wanted Cameron to believe I was unstable.

Jealous.

Dangerous.

The hospital discovered messages between them.

Messages in which Sophie repeatedly told Cameron that I was “obsessed with her” and “trying to ruin her career.”

Cameron had believed every word.

Until the evidence proved otherwise.

Then the hospital discovered something even worse.

Cameron had documented that I was “cooperative with vaginal delivery.”

I wasn’t.

I had repeatedly asked for surgery.

He had changed the medical record.

He had lied.

And that lie nearly killed me.

PART 5 — CAMERON CAME TO MY ROOM

A week after the delivery, Cameron finally came to see me.

He stood in the doorway.

He looked nothing like the man I had married.

His face was pale.

His shoulders were slumped.

“Amelia…”

I said nothing.

He stepped closer.

“I made a mistake.”

I looked at him.

“A mistake?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you were exaggerating.”

“You knew the baby’s size.”

“I did.”

“You knew my blood pressure was falling.”

“Yes.”

“You heard the nurses recommend an emergency C-section.”

He lowered his head.

“Yes.”

“Then it wasn’t a mistake.”

He looked up.

“What was it?”

I stared directly into his eyes.

“A choice.”

He began crying.

“I was angry.”

“Because of Sophie?”

He nodded.

“I thought you hurt her.”

“You never asked me what happened.”

“I know.”

“You didn’t trust your own wife.”

“I know.”

“You trusted another woman instead.”

He covered his face.

“I was wrong.”

I swallowed hard.

“You weren’t just wrong, Cameron.”

I pointed toward the bassinet beside me.

“You put our son’s life and mine at risk because you wanted to punish me.”

He couldn’t answer.

Then I said the sentence I had been waiting to say.

“You are never going to be my husband again.”

His face collapsed.

“Amelia, please.”

I shook my head.

“The woman who loved you died on that operating table.”

PART 6 — MY SON

A few days later, they brought my son to me.

He was tiny despite his size at birth, wrapped tightly in a soft blue blanket.

I held him against my chest.

He opened his eyes.

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

The hospital.

Cameron.

Sophie.

The betrayal.

The investigation.

All of it.

There was only my son.

I whispered:

“Mommy is here.”

His tiny fingers curled around mine.

And I cried.

Not because I was afraid anymore.

Because I had survived.

And so had he.

I named him Ethan.

It was the name Cameron and I had chosen together months earlier.

But I gave him my last name.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I wanted his identity to belong to him.

Not to his father’s mistakes.
